What Is "Environmental Control"?

Environmental Control refers to the use of assistive technology to increase a person's ability to control features in their environment, such as turning on a light or opening a door independently. Without the ability to control one's own environment life can be very frustrating. Although children generally rely on adults to some extent, there are many things that even young children enjoy doing by themselves.

Children thrive on asserting their independence from adults as they learn to be their own competent individual. Thus, it is important that when considering AT for children we take into account their need to be independent!

What can young children control?

Below are some ideas to increase a child's independence and decrease frustration.
When choosing what activity to target, consider the interests of the child and the family's routines.
