What are Battery Adapters?

Battery adapters allow an on/off toy to work with a switch. They work by interrupting the battery current and allowing a switch to control the current instead of the toy's on/off switch.

"On/off" toys or devices are those which only require the user to turn it "on" for it to work. Some examples of on/off toys and devices include: radios, tape players, (child-safe) fans, and bubble-making machines.

How do they work?

Battery adapters come in 2 sizes (AA, C/D).

They are not compatible with devices that require a 9-volt battery.

Match the size of the battery adapter to the size of the batteries used by the device.

Note: You can often cut the size of the metal plate for a better fit.
Place the battery adapter between the battery and the closing case.

Note: You can use needlenose pliers to break off a small piece of the plastic battery door to make room for the wire to exit the compartment.

Note: Manipulating battery adapters to work in multiple battery compartments can cause them to break. Therefore, it is recommended that once a battery adapter is installed it is used solely for that toy/device.
Turn the toy to the "on" position.

The toy will now work with a switch!

Note: If the switch does not activate the toy/device, try placing the battery adapter in another position and try again.

Where do I get them?

You can buy battery adapters for approximately $9.00 from a variety of vendors. You can also make your own battery adapters. When you consider the cost of buying a pre-made switch toy, battery adapters are a great money saver.
